thickener
Carrageenan
Score
38
Seaweed-derived thickener; EFSA re-evaluated it and flagged gaps, particularly for infants.
Food-grade carrageenan is distinct from degraded poligeenan, which is not permitted in food. EFSA's re-evaluation kept it authorized but could not exclude the presence of low-molecular-weight fractions and raised specific concerns about use in infant formula. Evidence for gut inflammation in adults at dietary levels remains contested.
